In view of high nitrogen oxide levels at ITO crossing Sheila Dikshit seeks environmental clearance from Union Minister

NEW DELHI: In view of high nitrogen oxide levels at the Capital's busy ITO crossing, the Delhi Government has decided to shift the 350-MW Pragati Power Project to Bawana and integrate it with the 1,000-MW Pragati Power Plant leading to the creation of a 1,350-MW power plant there.

Request

The decision was taken at a meeting between Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Union Environment Minister A. Raja on Wednesday. Ms. Dikshit had gone to the Union Minister to request him to grant environmental clearance for the 1,000-MW Pragati Power III at Bawana and the 350-MW Pragati-II Power Plant at Pragati Maidan near ITO for meeting Delhi's power needs.

Meeting

The meeting was also attended by Union Environment Secretary Prodipto Ghosh, Principal Secretary (Power) Rakesh Mehta and Delhi Environment Secretary J.K. Dadoo.

After detailed discussions it was decided that because of high levels of nitrogen oxide at ITO, the 350-MW Pragati Power Project be shifted to Bawana.

Mr. Raja also assured Ms. Dikshit that environment clearance for the 350-MW Pragati Power-II and 100 MW Pragati Power-II would be issued within one week.

Requirements

The Chief Minister emphasised the need for early clearance of these two power projects to meet the growing power requirements of Delhi keeping in mind the Commonwealth Games-2010, the city's increasing population and rapid urbanisation.
