Career counselling for visually-impaired students

This was an opportunity for students from remote villages in the State.

Chennai : Nethrodaya, a non-governmental organisation serving the visually impaired, organised a one-day career counselling guidance for visually-impaired students appearing for the X and XII Standard examinations at Velammal School, Mogappair.

Students from remote villages of Tamil Nadu got an opportunity to study various Government and private schemes and other career options.

The speakers who motivated the students were also visually impaired. Veerakumar, advocate, Mani, stenographer, Jalal Ali, musician, Kasi Mani, vocal training instructor and Dakshinamoorthy, English teacher, spoke to the students. Mr. Dakshinamoorthy promised a reward of Rs. 1,000 to each of the 222 participants who scored more than 1,000 marks in the Board exams.

Commissioner for the Disabled, V.K. Jayakodi, inaugurated the session. Students from various districts, who attended the workshop, urged the Commissioner to arrange scribes and for the implementation of half-an-hour extension of examination hours.

C. Govinda Krishnan, founder of Nethrodaya, said similar career counselling guidance should be held for other disabled students also.

Velammal School of Education provided the venue for the workshop besides food and accommodation for the participants. Hotel Green Park offered free transportation.
