HYDERABAD: It was a first for the Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) when 50 couples here and some 5,200 across the State were tied in wedlock at mass marriage programmes.

The programme at the TTD Kalayanamandapam here on Thursday morning attracted practically the entire who's who in the State capital who turned up to bless the couples.

Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy went up to the bridegrooms, giving each of them a `mangalasutram', accompanied by Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy and several Ministers.

Governor Rameshwar Thakur and Chief Justice G.S. Singhvi also blessed the couples. Among the gifts for the `blessed' couples were steel utensils, silver `kumkuma bharani', `mettelu' and `kankanaalu' that were earlier kept at the feet of Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala.

As the Vedic chants reverberated in the Kalyanamandapam, the grooms tied the `mangalasutras' around the necks of the brides, making them their life partners.

TTD's Executive Officer A.P.V.N. Sarma said "We have selected the couples after a broad screening programme. Each gets a special darshan later at Tirumala ."

TTD Chairman B. Karunakar Reddy said, "We are simply facilitating their weddings that are events of a lifetime's happiness."
