Association wins award for best-maintained housing colony with greenery

KOCHI: Residents of Panampilly Nagar proved once again that they could be a model community in keeping their premises clean.

The Panampilly Nagar Residents Association won, for the second time, the trophy for "the best maintained housing colony with greenery" at the recently concluded Cochin Flower Show 2007 organised by the Ernakulam District Agri-Horticultural Society.

The six-member landscape committee under the association has been doing the maintenance of the main avenue and its service roads. "We generate funds by a monthly subscription from commercial establishments along the main avenue and rent for using the master boards placed at the beginning of every cross road. Also we rent out the space on the medians for advertisements," said Hansa Johny, chairperson of the landscape committee.

The committee has a team of gardeners involved in the maintenance of the greenery round-the-year.

"We spent nearly Rs.10,000 every two months for maintaining this ambience," said Ms. Johny.

The profit earned after all expenses for the maintenance is being used for taking up new projects. "We have put up signage at cross roads, so that visitors to the area are properly guided," she said. Also, the association is reviving one of its garbage processing units that became defunct of late. They have one unit operational now, catering to half of the 3,000-odd families residing at the Panampilly Nagar.

Interactive session

The Ernakulam District Residents Association Apex Council has urged the office-bearers of residents associations in Ernakulam, Mattanchery and Thripunithura electrical divisions to attend the interactive session being held with officials of Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB).

The interaction will be held at the conference hall of the KSEB substation opposite to the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, Kaloor, on Saturday. Deputy Chief Engineer and Executive Engineers of KSEB are expected to attend the meeting.
