NEW DELHI: Hot on the heels of the suspension of ten students, Jawaharlal Nehru University on Thursday suspended almost the entire leadership of the JNU Staff Association (JNUSA) for allegedly instigating the students to gherao and illegally confining Registrar Avais Ahmad a few days ago. The president, secretary, joint secretary and an executive committee member of the Staff Association were issued suspension letters on Thursday afternoon. "They have suspended us under Rule 51 of the terms and conditions of the conduct of the non-teaching staff association. We will decide our future course of action after our meeting tonight," said JNUSA secretary Jagdish Vidyarthi. Vice-Chancellor B. B. Bhattacharya said the four were suspended for encouraging the students to misbehave with Mr. Ahmad on Monday. "They had instigated the students to tie a rope around the Registrar's car. They did not make any efforts to help him and sided with the students. They even abused him," he said. Prof. Bhattacharya also said that immediately after their suspension the JNUSA shot off a letter to him regretting Monday's incident. Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor also met JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) president Dhananjay Tripathi on Thursday. "He said he would soon apologise formally and expressed his regret over the episode. He said he would try to get the students' union pass a resolution condemning the entire incident," Prof. Bhattacharya added.
