NEW DELHI: In the first major public meeting organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Capital in the run-up to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi elections, party president Rajnath Singh on Thursday accused the United Progressive Alliance Government of adopting a soft stand towards terrorism and failing to curb the price rise that has hit the common man hard.

Addressing the meeting at Vikas Marg in East Delhi, Mr. Singh said under the present regime no part of the country could be considered "safe" as terrorists had been striking at will. He held the appeasement policy of the Congress-led Government responsible for this present state of affairs.

Mr. Singh said due to the failure of the Government to hang Mohammad Afzal, who was convicted by the Supreme Court in the Parliament attack case, incidents like the bombing of Samjhauta Express have taken place since the morale of the terrorists has risen. Moreover, he said, such an approach had demoralised the security forces in the country.

The BJP president also accused the Centre of adopting anti-people policies that had led to a massive increase in prices of almost all commodities. Claiming that during the six-year rule of the previous National Democratic Alliance Government people faced no problem relating to access of or prices of commodities despite there being an 8 per cent growth rate, he said the situation changed drastically ever since UPA came to power.

Mr. Singh also charged the UPA Government with not trying hard enough to check the price spiral. "Actually this Government does not want to curb price rise due to its own vested interests."

Party in-charge of Delhi and Member of Parliament Vijay Kumar Malhotra said even after making several promises, the Congress Government had not been able to curb the price spiral nor rein in the terrorists. In Delhi, he said, people were also suffering due to inflated power and water bills and increase in road tax, education cess and property tax.

Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan has demanded that the Government come out with a white paper on price rise.
