THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The public distribution system in the State would be strengthened for the benefit of small traders, Chief Minister V.S. Acuhuthanandan has said. He was speaking after laying the foundation stone of the proposed Supplyco Hyper market in the city on Thursday. The Chief Minister said the Government has come up with the idea of a hyper market to provide essential commodities to the customers at a reasonable price. "The strategy of private retail chains is to first lower the price to attract customers. Once they build the trust they will hike the price," said Mr. Achuthanandan. Minister for Food and Civil Supplies C. Divakaran, who presided over the function, said with the launch of hyper markets, the State Civil Supplies Co-operative was entering a new territory. The hyper market, equipped with all modern facilities, is aimed as a response to the challenge faced from the retail chains of private players such as Reliance and Tata, Mr. Divakaran said.
More such outlets
In addition to Thiruvananthapuram, hyper markets will also be opened in Kottayam and Ernakulam. The function was also attended by Mayor C. Jayan Babu; V. Sivankutty, V. Surendran Pillai and Mankode Radhakrishnan MLAs.
