Scouts and Guides remember their founders

Children say they are proud to be part of the movement

BANGALORE: What is it that makes you celebrate the birthday of Lord Robert Baden Powell and Lady Olave Baden Powell, founders of Scouts and Guides movement, was the question posed to young guide Yashaswini M.L., studying in Class VIII.

"He has taught to lead a disciplined life," was her reply. So what according to her constituted discipline? She riposted: "It's the way I am talking to you." And went on to say: "This movement has helped me become trustworthy, courteous and thrifty."

Fellow guide Nikita A.K. chipped in: "It has helped me become courageous, lead a good life and be of help to society. I feel proud to wear this blue dress and the knot."

This attitude typified the 500-odd scouts and guides gathered to celebrate the World Scout Day organised every year to celebrate the birthday of the founders. The celebration of their 150th birth anniversary was organised by Bharat Scouts and Guides, Karnataka, at its office on Palace Road on Thursday.

The children, aged between five and 15, had their own ways of remembering the work of founders. While some made a short speech, others paid tributes through paintings and greeting cards. Some participated in a quiz on the Powell couple during the daylong programme.

Paintings

Many were seen drawing paintings on the theme "nature and pollution".

"I want to make my city look like this," said Sneha E. a VII standard student, pointing to her painting of a stream meandering across hillocks and coconut groves.

Dheeraj K.G., who represents Chamundi Scout Group, admiring his work, said: "We need to preserve trees, which help us in preventing pollution."

What summed up the day's programme was the birthday card made by Bhuvi R., a second standard student.
