dated February 24, 1957: Ghana's new status

Queen Elizabeth on February 22 held a meeting of her Privy Council to approve an order giving effect to Ghana's new status as an independent nation within the Commonwealth. This act by the Queen was the final link in the chain of constitutional events leading up to the emergence of Ghana as a sovereign State and a Commonwealth member. Ghana, hitherto the Gold Coast, a British West African colonial territory, assumes her new status on March 6.
