BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Friday reduced the sentence of imprisonment passed by a Hassan court against H.D. Lokesh for throwing acid on Chennamma Deve Gowda, wife of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, and Bhavani, wife of Public Works Minister and son of Mr. Deve Gowda, H.D. Revanna. Even though the court confirmed the lower court order, it set off the sentence of eight years imprisonment to six years undergone by Lokesh, son of Basava Gowda, who is the brother of Mr. Deve Gowda. A Division Bench, comprising Justice K. Sreedhar Rao and Justice C.K. Kumaraswamy, partly allowed Lokesh's plea for reducing the sentence and set it off to the time he had spent in prison. According to the prosecution, the acid attack on Chennamma Deve Gowda and Bhavani Revanna took place in 2001 in Hassan district. It said that on February 21, 2001, Chennamma had come to Bhavani's house in Holenarsipur in Hassan district to offer puja at an Eshwara temple at Hardanahalli when the incident happened. Additional Sessions Judge of Hassan A.C. Pujar sentenced Lokesh to eight years imprisonment and also imposed a fine on him. The State had appealed against the sentence and urged the High Court to enhance it.
