BHUBANESWAR: To give patronage to the dying and marginalised folk art forms of Orissa, the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC), Kolkata, under the Ministry of Culture, has initiated the `guru-sishya parampara' (a tradition in which students stay with teacher while learning) programme. The scheme was launched by the ministry to groom new talent in the age-old `guru-sishya parampara' through all the seven zonal cultural centres of the country, said centre's programme coordinator Tapas Samantray here on Friday.
Financial support
Under the programme, each guru is extended financial support for one or two years to run the training programme with four disciples. While the guru gets honorarium of Rs. 2,000 per month, the students receive Rs.500 each and the accompanying musicians, where required, get Rs.900 per month, he added. The objective of the scheme is to help the talented take up their art as a profession. Although the scheme was normally offered for one year, it was being extended for another year for the gurus whose students show excellence in their training, Mr. Samantray said and added that at the end of the first year, the grantee gurus were being invited to give public performances at the Bharatiyam cultural complex of EZCC at Kolkata.
Debut show
In the first phase of the programme, EZCC extended its support to Paika Akhada (martial art of Orissa) troupe of Dinabandhu Biswal of Khurda. "Following the EZCC support and intervention, the troupe was selected by the Ministry of Defence for their debut performance in the Republic Day parade this year. The two other gurus who were included in the first phase were Padma Shri Maguni Das of Raghurajpur village for Gotipua dance and Ranjan Kumar Sahoo of western Orissa for Sambalpuri dance, it was learnt. The second phase had included Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee Maguni Charan Kuanr of Keonjhar.
Wood carving
Similarly pala artiste Balabhadra Panda of Pipili and wood carving artist Muralidhar Moharana of Kalahandi district were included in the programme, he said.
