Letters to the Editor
This refers to the editorial "Crisis defused" (Feb. 23). By announcing the election schedule for Uttar Pradesh at a time when the Constitution was facing a challenge, the Election Commission has proved that Indian democracy is in safe hands. Any attempt to flout the Constitution will be frustrated by the Constitution itself. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) also deserves equal praise for its firm stand against the dissolution of the U.P. Assembly. One hopes the Election Commission will display the same resolve in ensuring free and fair elections.
S. Nallasivan,
The Election Commission has done a commendable job. It is now up to the masses to deal with the present disposition. The use of Article 356 would have severely undermined the federal set-up. Thanks to our Constitution framers for making the Election Commission an independent body.
