Parliamentary Secretaries take over

BANGALORE: N. Suryanarayana Reddy and Mahima J. Patel of the Janata Dal (S) on Thursday assumed charge as Parliamentary Secretaries. The Chief Minister administered the oath of office to Mr. Reddy and Mr. Patel at a function organised at the conference hall of the Vidhana Soundha. Mr. Kumaraswamy congratulated the Parliamentary Secretaries and wished them success in their new assignments.

Mr. Kumaraswamy said Mr. Patel, MLA from Channagiri, would work as Special Representative of the State Government in New Delhi to coordinate the development work of the State with the Union Government. Mr. Reddy (52), MLA from Kurugod Assembly Constituency in Bellary district, is a businessman by profession. He defeated the former minister and Congress candidate Allum Veerabhadrappa in the last Assembly elections.

drugs

Bangalore: The Government Analyst, Drugs Testing Laboratory, Bangalore, has said that Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate Injection IP (batch no. DX-42, manufactured by Martin and Brown Pharmaceuticals, Hissar 125044) and Bisacodyl tablets IP 5 mg (batch no. T60541, manufactured by Arvind Remedies Ltd., Kakkalur 602003) are "not of standard quality". Chemists, wholesalers, doctors, hospitals, and nursing homes have been warned not to stock, sell or use these drugs. In case they hold any stock, they should intimate the area Drugs Inspector or Assistant Drugs Controller. Public are warned not to use the above mentioned drugs.

Scholarship

Bangalore: Scholarships out of Major Cheppudira Ponnapa Rajaram Endowment Fund at the rate of Rs. 200 a month for 10 months from July 2006 to April 2007 to the best sculptors, who are studying sculptural art at the fine arts college/institution recognised by Centre/State Government in 2006-07. Candidates may apply through the head of the institution in which they are studying. Application forms can be obtained either from their institution or from the Assistant Director, Karnataka Government Museum and Venkatappa Art Gallery, Kasturba Road. Bangalore: Five research fellowships have been sanctioned to DOS in Zoology, University of Mysore, Manasagangotri, under "Award for UGC research fellowships in science for meritorious students". The fellowship carries an amount of Rs. 8,000 a month. Those who have already registered for Ph.D may apply. IT raids on mine owners

BELLARY: A special squad comprising of Income Tax officials, drawn from Bangalore, Hubli and Belgaum, conducted raids on the offices and residences of several prominent mine owners in Sandur and Hospet in Bellary district.

Kumbhabhisheka, Chandika Yaga

Udupi: The "Brahma Kumbhabhishekha", and "Shatha Chandika Yaga" of the 800-year-old Sri Durgaparmeshwari Temple at Alevoor would be held on February 25. Managing trustee of the temple K. Krishnaraj Bhat told presspersons here on Thursday that nearly 5,000 devotees were expected to attend the "Brahma Kumbhishekha". A "Maha Anna Santharpane" would be held on the same afternoon. A sum of Rs. 30 lakh is being spent on all the rituals. The "Brahmakalashotsava" (renovation) celebrations of the temple had started on Wednesday. Medical Education Minister V.S. Bangalore: Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board has made arrangements to distribute stationary for the March 2007 Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination. Chief superintendents of SSLC examination centres have been directed to collect it from the KSEEB between Friday and Wednesday. Stationary may be collected from the respective block education offices from March 1, a release said. — Staff Reporter

Protest

Kolar: There was tension in Kolar on Friday as autorickshaw drivers staged a demonstration in front of the Town Police Station condemning the police action to take an autorickshaw driver into custody on the charge of destroying a cut-out. The drivers gathered at the police station in support of Raju who was taken into custody on a complaint filed by residents that he had spoiled the cut-out in the APMC yard bypass area. The police managed to strike compromise between the two groups and released the driver.

Free bus pass

Kolar: MLA K. Srinivas Gowda on Friday called upon citizens to treat physically challenged people with respect. Disabled people should not be insulted for their physical disorder, he appealed while distributing free bus passes to the disabled people given by Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) at a function here. KSRTC Kolar division and Kolar District Physically Challenged People's Association organised the function. Divisional technical engineer M. Ramamurthy presided over it. Association president R. Direction to officials

Kolar: Kolar district in-charge Minister Alangur Srinivas has directed the officials to take effective measures to supply drinking water in summer. He was presiding over a review meeting at the zilla panchayat hall here on Friday. The Minister suggested to senior officers to make random visits to the water supply installations to review the works there. Zilla panchayat president Munivenkatappa, panchayat vice-president Ratnamma, Deputy Commissioner Anjum Parvez and panchayat chief executive officer Hritwik Pande were present. — Staff Reporter

RTO to be shifted

on February 26

SHIMOGA: The Regional Transport Office (RTO) here will be shifted to the APMC Yard on February 26 as the Government has approved construction of the new building after demolishing the old structure in which it was housed. The RTO will be temporarily located in the "Y-3" building on the APMC Yard belonging to the Mallikarjun Trading Company. — Special Correspondent

MYSORE: Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (IGMRS), Mysore has organised a two-day festival of North Eastern cultures on its premises at Wellington House here on Irwin Road, from February 27. The festival begins from 7 p.m. onwards on both days.

Artistes from Assam and Manipur will perform dances like "bihu", "rasaleela", drum dance and so on. — Staff Correspondent.

Census

Madikeri: The Codava National Council (CNC) secretary general N.U. Nachappa on Friday urged the district administration to instruct census enumerators to fill the caste column of Kodavas as "Kodava", instead of others. Census would begin on February 26.

He has faxed copies of his memorandum to the President, Prime Minister, Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India and the Chief Minister of Karnataka.

Hospital to be upgraded

Sirsi: The 30-bed Siddapur Government Hospital will be upgraded to a 100-bed hospital with more doctors, staff and an additional hospital building, K.G. Naik, BJP urban unit president, said in a release on Friday.

Six roads would be laid at a cost of Rs. 20 crore under the Prime Minister's Gram Sadak Scheme. Survey work was in progress, he said in the release.

Sirsi: The Sirsi taluk-level Bharat Seva Dal children's integrity meet will be held on February 24 on the Sirsi Marikamba Junior College premises at 9.30 a.m. MLA Vivekananda Vaidya will hoist the Seva Dal flag. Taluk panchayat president Anand Goudar will inaugurate the meet. Bharat Seva Dal committee president S.I. Bhat will preside over the function. BEO Devidas Moger and principal K.N. Hosmani will participate in the programme.

Pistol found

Belgaum: A country pistol was found in a roadside gutter near Kolhapur Circle here on Friday.

According to police, the pistol was found by workers while they were cleaning the gutter in front of Rahul Bar, owned by Siddappa Pujari. Mr. Pujari informed Superintendent of Police Hemant Nimbalkar, who rushed to the spot . The weapon has been seized and a case has been registered with A.P.M.C. Police Station.
