Kalam to launch `Suvarna Gramodaya'

  • Rs. 1 crore will be allocated to each village under the scheme

    BANGALORE: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will launch the State Government's "Suvarna Gramodaya" programme at Srinivasa Saradgi village in Gulbarga taluk on Sunday.

    Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj C.M. Udasi told presspersons here on Friday that Dr. Kalam would inaugurate the programme at Srinivasa Saradgi, one of the most backward villages in Gulbarga district. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy would preside over the programme. The programme aims at providing urban facilities in all 28,000 villages of the State in the next 10 years.

    Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, Union Minister of State for Planning M.V. Rajashekaran, Minister for Sanitation and Sugar S.A. Ravindranath, Minister for Agricultural Marketing Sharanabasappa Darshanapur, Minister for Animal Husbandry Revu Naik Belamagi and Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly N. Dharam Singh would participate in the programme.

    The Government has decided to implement the scheme in 1,000 villages this year and Rs. 1 crore has been earmarked for each village. A sum of Rs. 165 crore had already been released, Mr. Udasi said.

    Under the programme, priority would be given to major activities such as infrastructure, industry, human resource development and community development.

    An action plan was prepared to each village after holding a meeting of the grama sabha.

    The action plan would incorporate Dr. Kalam's vision of eliminating poverty and provision of urban facilities in rural areas (PURA).

    Non-governmental organisations, self-help groups and gram panchayats would be involved in the programme.
