BANGALORE: In the light of the direction issued by Governor T.N. Chaturvedi on holding elections to the post of the Chairman of the Legislative Council on Thursday, the Congress demanded resignation of the Janata Dal (Secular)-BJP coalition Government on charges of constitutional improprieties. Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president M. Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly N. Dharam Singh and Leader of the Opposition in the Council H.K. Patil told presspersons here on Friday that the Government had committed a "fraud on the Constitution" by adjourning the Council without reading out the message sent across by the Governor. Terming the Government's functioning as "Tughlaq Darbar," they said Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and his Cabinet colleagues had no "moral right" to continue in the Government. No Governor in the country had written such a letter. Mr. Chaturvedi himself had pointed out lapses of the Government in his letter and he had drawn the President's attention towards the state of affairs in the State, they said. Explaining the issue from their point of view, the leaders demanded, "either Mr. Kumaraswamy should resign forthwith realising what damage his Government has caused to the Constitution or the Governor should take steps to invoke Article 356." Asked about their next move, they said that the Congress Legislature Party would discuss it.
