Fight for relief continues even after 25 years

Farmers displaced by PABR on a do-or-die battle; relay fast enters second day in Anantapur


  • State Government urged to pay compensation and provide employment
  • So far 13 farmers died pursuing the issue since the last 25 years, according to CPI (M) leader

    ANANTAPUR: The relay fast launched by farmers who were displaced following the construction of Penna Ahobilam Balancing Reservoir entered second day on Friday.

    Even after 25 years after the project was grounded, farmers who lost their land are yet to be compensated.

    Protesting under the aegis of PABR Nirvasithula Sangham they demanded that the State Government pay compensation for their lands submerged in the reservoir, at least now.

    Slogans raised

    The displayed placards seeking justice and raised slogans against the Government.

    Speaking at the protest, district secretary of CPI (M) G. Obulakonda Reddy said the oustees of the project did not get justice for 25 long years. He urged the government to pay compensation as well as provide employment to the displaced families.

    He explained that farmers of Ramasagarm and Jeedipalli villages in Beluguppa mandal, Mylarampalli and Rachapalli of Uravakonda mandal, Jayapuram and Korrakodu in Kuderu mandal had lost their lands in the project.

    The displaced families who did not get compensation so far had also lost their little savings like gold jewellery in making rounds of Government offices in Anantapur.

    Tragic case

    Besides, 13 farmers died in pursuance of compensation during the last 25 years, he noted.

    He demanded payment of compensation in the presence of farmers without giving any scope for corruption or middlemen.

    District secretary of Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham P. Peddi Reddy said there was no impact on the government though they had been representing the problem repeatedly to the Ministers from the district and District Collector for the last six months.
