COIMBATORE: The Director of Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Baldev Raj, called upon industries to have more links with academic and research bodies and make use of the resources available with them. Inaugurating Subcon 2007, a sub-contracting fair, here on Friday, he said that the units would be able to improve their products and have more scope for innovations through such links.
Opportunities
Industries should also recognise opportunities, see how they could have a synergy with other organisations or individuals and develop their business. Raj said that today competitiveness was a major issue and it was global competitiveness, which was imperative. An entrepreneur should aim at having his industry in the forefront to sell the products. "We must have an idea, convert it into a product, should be able to sell it and join the niche segment by doing the best." The country demonstrated this ability in software and to some extent in automobiles too. Many Indian industrialists were today icons at the global level. During the last 10 years, the confidence of the industry that they had the ability to compete at the global level had gone up manifold. The quality of Indian human resource was high and Indians were able to do competitive assignments not only in foreign countries but in the domestic market too. Normally, bringing together stakeholders would mean co-ordination between industry, institutes and research bodies. But, each of these sections had different sub-groups and these should also be brought together.
Poverty
However, the country still had poverty, villages without electricity and such social concerns. The country should learn to earn wealth and distribute it with ethics, he said. "Indians have the possibility to demonstrate that they can do business with ethics." This was very essential now when the country was growing economically. "It is now a question of sustainability - can we do something continuously better and sustain it." The Subcon Chairman, J. Balu, said that the three-day event had over 200 participants, including a number of large-scale companies and vendors. The fair was organised by the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association with Small Industries Service Institute and the National Small Industries Corporation as co-sponsors. Seminars on vendor development and sub-contracting plan would be held.
