Tax evasion equated with corruption

Special Correspondent

"Revenue should be spent purposefully "

  • It will only shift the burden to others: former Judge
  • "Taxation should be within people's capacity to pay"

Puducherry: Former Judge of Madras High Court Justice David Annoussamy has said that the revenue mobilised through taxes and duties should be utilised for purposeful schemes.

Addressing the employees and industrial and trading establishments on the occasion of the Central Excise Day observed by the Pondicherry Central Excise Commissionerate here on Friday, Mr. Annousamy said that evasion of taxes was as bad as corruption and it would only shift the burden to some others. He said that States should adopt different cannons for levying taxes and their collection.

With vagaries of globalisation having set in, the Government's responsibilities had increased to ensure that economy was not affected.

Hence, it was the duty of the eligible citizens to pay the taxes and duties on time.

He said that there should be no complication in the tax structure and tendency to find escape routes would increase if the quantum of tax was higher.

Democracy would be a success if the direct taxation system was within the people's capacity to pay. He distributed mementoes to establishments who had remitted the highest amount of Central Excise and Service Tax during 2005-2006.

ONGC (Chennai), the BSNL, Cuddalore, Hindustan Lever Limited, Vestas Wind Technology (formerly NEG Micon (I) Ltd), Kallakurichi Cooperative Sugar Mills Limited, Micro Labs Limited, GAIL India Limited and Imetrex Technology received the mementos.

Commissioner of Central Excise K. Sekhar referred to various facilities available from the commissionerate and stressed the need for tax compliance. The Joint Commissioner K. M. Nagarajan welcomed.
