Karunanidhi writes to Sonia on Cauvery

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Friday said any discussion on the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) in Parliament should not create enmity between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

In a letter to chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance Sonia Gandhi, Mr. Karunanidhi said he had reliably learnt that a delegation under the leadership of former Prime Minister Deve Gowda had sought an opportunity to raise and discuss the issue in Parliament. "It appears that permission for discussion on this issue has been granted."

Mr. Karunanidhi said he had also received information that leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in Parliament T.R. Baalu had asked for an equal opportunity to express Tamil Nadu's views on the issue.

"I am apprehensive that any discussion on this subject may lead to adding fuel to the prevailing unwanted situation. Therefore, my plea is that instead of amicably solving the problems of farmers of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, such debate should not lead to creating enmity between the two States." — Special Correspondent
