Labour Progressive Front readying for changes

Special Correspondent

NEYVELI: The Labour Progressive Front (LPF), sole recognised trade union of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation, is all set to expand the composition of its executive committee by electing sector-wise office-bearers. It calls for amending its by-laws and obtaining approval from the competent authorities. When the LPF came into being it hardly had 3,000 members, but now its strength has swelled to 10,400.

But the present 35-member executive committee is finding it extremely difficult to cope with the more than three-fold increase in the LPF membership.

Hence, it has decided to appoint joint secretaries for every 250-300 members and vice-presidents for every 500 members. It has also decided to create a new post — deputy general secretary — and formalise the just created office secretary post.

However, this move is fraught with hurdles, because the prospective office-bearers want to align with a particular sector of their choice. A section of employees feel that creation of new posts will dilute the powers of the existing office-bearers.

The efforts to find out a solution in the general body meeting did not make much headway. Therefore, to sort out the issue, the LPF leadership is now holding talks with the sector-wise members.

G. Dhandapani, LPF president, told The Hindu that talks were being held separately with the employees of the mines, thermal power stations, office, stores and transport section, and this exercise would continue till February 22.
