Param Vir Chakra awardee felicitated

VILLUPURAM: Captain Bana Singh, decorated with the highest military honour of Param Vir Chakra, was felicitated here by the Villupuram district administration, political leaders and certain schools on Friday.

Captain Bana Singh said that he led 62 defence personnel to capture the Jinnah Peak, 21,153 ft above mean sea-level, on the Siachen Glacier from the Pakistani troops and succeeded in hoisting the National Flag on the peak on June 26, 1987.

State president of the Bharatiya Janata Party L.Ganesan said the Indian soldiers excelled in their valour. District Collector Brajendra Navnith said the Captain was born in Katyal in Jammu and joined the services in 1969. It was a rare honour to felicitate the PVC decorated Captain, first of its kind, in the district.

Superintendent of Police K. Periaiah said in the country with over 100-crore population, there were only 21 PVC decorated personnel, and of them only two were alive. Most of the personnel were given the award posthumously.

Major General K.K. Tiwari, Maria Vinita Choudhary, Assistant Director, Ex-Servicemen Welfare Association, P.A. Naresh, Chief Educational Officer,Shyam Kumari of Vraja Trust, and Yateeswari Atma Vikasa Priya Amba of Ulundurpet Sarada Ashram participated.
