Gold ornaments taken away

PALAKKAD: Seven persons broke open the safe of the Ezhacadu branch of Kanjikulam Service Cooperative Bank and took away 44 kg of gold ornaments and Rs. 2.73 lakh on Wednesday night. They tied the watchman, Chandran, with a bed sheet. Two of them stood guard on him, while the others collected the booty. Top police officials, including Deputy Inspector-General of Police Harinath Mishra, visited the bank. — Staff Reporter

Boat safety measures stepped up

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Forest Department has stepped up measures to ensure safety of its boats in services at various places in view the boat tragedy at Thattekkad. Minister for Forest Benoy Viswom directed the Chief Conservator of Forests that passengers should not be allowed to travel if the boats were old or in disrepair. Repair of boats in service should be carried out in time. The officials should carry out necessary inspections and undertake other safety measures. — Special Correspondent

Notice served on Hilal

MALAPPURAM: Hilal Mohammed's wife Asiya on Friday accepted the notice served by the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court here on her husband summoning him to appear before it on Monday. When Crime Branch officers arrived at Hilal Mohammed's house at Perumbilavu in Thrissur district on Friday, Ms. Asia at first refused to accept the court order. Concern over CPI(M)-BJP clashes

THRISSUR: The Indian National Congress on Friday expressed concern over the alleged Communist Party of India (Marxist)-Bharatiya Janata Party clashes in the district. A general body meeting held at the office of the District Congress Committee said the alleged clashes were causing untold suffering to the public. Staff Reporter

RSS activists injured

THRISSUR: Four activists of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) were on Friday admitted to a private hospital here with assault injuries. They are Kanakkaparambil Vaisakh, 22, Mukhya Sikshak of the Poovathur unit of RSS, Vellaparambil Shinoj, 26, Kuluthekkad Janesh, 25, and Poovathur Veettil Pratheesh, 24. They told the police that they were assaulted by a nine-member gang near the Kairali Oil Mill at Poovathur near here on Friday evening.

Two killed in accident

KOLLAM: Two persons were killed when the car in which they were travelling fell into a 45-ft-deep granite quarry at Kaithakode, near Kundara, on Friday afternoon. The deceased were identified as Mohanan Pillai, 45, and his relative, Chandrashekaran Pillai, 52.

Mohanan Pillai's daughter, Manju, who was driving the car, and Chandra shekaran's son, Anoop, were seriously injured and have been admitted to a private hospital here. . Inaugurated
