One killed in attack on bank employees

Rs. 20 lakhs taken away by assailants

BHUBANESWAR: One person was killed and five injured when a group of persons attacked three employees of the Central Bank of India and took away Rs. 20 lakhs from their possession in Bhadrak town on Friday.

It occurred at around 1.30 p.m. when the bank employees were coming out the office of the Life Insurance Corporation of India. The money was being taken from the LIC office at the Banta Square to the bank. Six assailants, who came in three motorcycles, opened fire at the bank staff as soon as they came out of the LIC office.

They first attacked the security man of the bank Diwakar Sahu. Later, they snatched away the briefcase containing the cash and fired indiscriminately before speeding away on the national highway No. 5 towards Balasore.

Admitted to hospital

The injured persons were rushed to Shriram Chandra Bhanja Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for treatment. One of the employees, Lalmohan Singh, succumbed to his injuries.

The two other bank employees, who sustained bullet injuries, were Sahu and Sanak Majumdar.

The three members of the public who were injured include a girl.

Senior police officials of the district visited the spot and forensic experts were collecting evidence.
