KARIMNAGAR: Though the Congress, the TDP, the BJP and the TRS have fielded their candidates from the Karimnagar local bodies' constituency for election to the Legislative Council, it is likely to be a keen contest between Congress and TDP candidates with both parties having an equal number of local bodies' representatives in the district. Congress has fielded DCC general secretary and Chalimeda Ananda Rao Institute of Medical Sciences chairman Chalimeda Laxminarasimha Rao (Laxman Rao), while the TDP has fielded Chennadi Sudhakar Rao, a contractor and close relative of the BJP's senior leader Ch. Vidyasagar Rao. Besides, the BJP's Peddapalli parliamentary constituency in charge Merugu Hanmanthu Goud and TRS candidate N. Laxman Rao have filed their nomination papers. Against the total voters (including ZPTC and MPTC members, corporators and councillors) of 1,062, the Congress party has a strength of 402 members followed by the TDP with 387, the TRS with 94, the BJP with 43, the CPI with 15, the MIM with nine and 110 independents. Without any party's support, the Congress has a lead over the TDP in the local bodies' representatives. However, it is believed that the Congress is planning to rope in the support of MIM and CPI local bodies members. Congress candidate Ch. Laxman Rao, who is the son of former TDP Minister C. Ananda Rao, is also likely to split some of the TDP votes because of his close association with all parties' leaders including the TDP in the district. The District Congress leaders have already started chalking out strategies to woo the support of Independents and other parties' local bodies' leaders. Besides, TDP candidate Ch. Sudhakar Rao, who has close relations with some BJP and TRS leaders of the district, is also likely to cashing in on their support. The Independent local bodies' representatives have become crucial in this election. Both the Congress and the TDP leaders have started wooing the Independents.
