Protest held against G.O. 938

State attempting to throttle voice of press: TDP, TNSF activists



FOR A CAUSE: TDP activists burning copies of the controversial G.O. in front of the RTC bus depot in Nizamabad on Friday.

NIZAMABAD: Activists of the Telegu Desam Party and its students' wing Telugu Nadu Students Federation staged a rasta roko and burnt copies of the controversial G.O. No. 938 in front of the RTC bus depot, here on Friday protesting the Government's alleged attempt to throttle the voice of the press.

The protesters ridiculed Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's statement in the Assembly that the G.O. was issued by authorities without bringing it to his notice. They also demanded that the Chief Minister resign owning moral responsibility. The TDP leaders -- B. Chandram and D. Raji Reddy -- and TNSF State secretary B. Venugopal Yadav were present.

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarti Parishad workers also strongly protested the issue of the G.O., which they described as an attack on free press. They held protest demonstration on Telangana University campus.

Free press

Journalists under the banner of the Andhra Pradesh Working Journalists Union here also took out a rally in protest against the issue of the G.O. and submitted a memorandum to District Revenue Officer C. Sreeram Reddy.

They shouted slogans against the G.O. and the Chief Minister .

Journalist leaders observed that the freedom of expression and free press enshrined in the Constitution fell in danger in wake of the issue of the G.O.

Withdrawn

However, they felt happy as the controversial G.O. was withdrawn.

APUWJ (Adhoc Committee) convenor Ahmad Ali Khan led the protest.
