HYDERABAD: Editors of newspapers welcomed the Government's decision to withdraw Government Order 938 while being critical of its intentions to come up with such an order. Kingshuk Nag, Resident Editor, Times of India, Hyderabad, said it was good that the Government realised its folly and withdrew the controversial Order. "But I am not too sure about future. The Order stands withdrawn for time being and it could be brought in some other form. We need to keep a watch". He disagreed with the argument that the Chief Minister was not aware of the Order. Government Orders were normally issued after an elaborate process and this could be known from the file notings. K. Ramachandra Murthy, Editor, Andhra Jyothi, said withdrawal of the Order was a good thing. But it was sad that the Government could think of coming up with such an Order. "It shows its mindset and intolerance of the Chief Minister and some of the Ministers." "The G.O. took birth, died and got buried within 24 hours," said Zahed Ali Khan, Editor, Siasat. "Its life was for just a few hours. Such an experiment was done during N.T. Rama Rao's regime but was stopped following a strong reaction from journalist fraternity." Former Andhra Jyothi editor I. Venkata Rao too described it as a "good decision, but still the intentions of the Government are exposed." Such a G.O., if enforced, would have led to countrywide uproar as it was nothing but "media policing". Former Editor of Andhra Prabha daily Potturi Venkateswara Rao said the Government did the right thing in immediately withdrawing it when it learnt about its issuance.
