HYDERABAD: The Congress finally managed to win over independent corporators in the Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation here on Friday by extracting a promise that they would support the ruling party's candidate in the election to Mayor's post. The nine corporators -- eight being Congress rebels and one of the TDP -- met Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy two times to discuss the arrangement. They were accompanied by Commercial Taxes Minister Konathala Ramakrishna. Hectic consultations between the Minister and the corporators brought cheer to the Congress camp as the rebel leader T. Nagi Reddy promised unconditional support to the Congress candidate. Later, talking to reporters, Nagi Reddy said, "There are no conditions from our side and we have decided to extend our support to the Congress candidate. We have not bargained for any post." The other corporators nodded in agreement.
Sealed cover
Meanwhile, APCC president K. Keshava Rao has decided to depute an observer for the Mayoral election in Visakhapatnam on February 26. He will carry with him a sealed cover containing the names of the candidates for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor. The Congress has already announced that its Mayoral candidate will be a corporator belonging to the Backward Classes.
