Poachers arrested in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: At least three poachers have been arrested over the past six months after the Jammu and Kashmir wildlife department launched a drive to protect fauna in the wetlands of the valley, a top official said on Friday

``Three poachers have been arrested under various sections of wildlife protection laws and cases have been registered against them,'' Wildlife Warden Abdul Rauf Zargar told PTI.

He said 18 guns of various makes, including locally manufactured single barrel and imported double barrel guns, have been seized from the poachers. Three boats and a private vehicle were seized from poachers in Hokersar Wetland Reserve, which attracts different species of migratory birds, especially cranes during the winter. ``To curb poaching, we have deployed field staff in the wetlands and the strength of anti-poaching teams has been augmented. Night patrolling has been enhanced around Hokersar, Shallabugh, Hygam, Mirgund and Narkara wetland reserves to keep proper vigil on poaching activities,'' Zargar said.

``Although several stringent laws are in force to prevent poaching, some elements continue to indulge in such activities that are not only detrimental to the flora and fauna of the Valley but to mankind as well. ``There is a need for creating awareness among masses about protecting wildlife for sustenance of human race,'' he said. - PTI
