Protesters stop train at Yelahanka

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Residents of Yelahanka on Friday stopped the Bangalore-bound Karnataka Express at the Yelahanka railway station for nearly 30 minutes as part of their ongoing protests against the proposed move to set up the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike's (BBMP) zonal office in Byatarayanapura and to rename the Yelahanka Assembly constituency as Byatarayanapura Assembly constituency.

Around 1,500 people squatted on the tracks and staged a peaceful demonstration under the aegis of the Forum for Citizens' Rights. In view of the protest, the police had stepped the security at the railway station by deploying additional forces.

Meanwhile, the dharna in front of the Kempe Gowda statue on Yelahanka Main Road entered the third day on Friday.

Forum president A.B. Shiva Kumar said that neither elected representatives nor the officials had spoken to them so far to address their demands.
