15 security personnel killed

IMPHAL:
Heavily armed insurgents carried out an ambush on Saturday morning at Khoirok Lamkai under Sadar Hills killing 13 personnel of 1 Indian Reserve Battalion and two policemen on the spot and injuring many others. Hospital sources said the death toll may rise as the condition of some of the injured is said to be serious.
They were coming back from Khoupum, a tribal village, after performing election duty on Friday.
Official sources said the cavalcade of the election and security personnel was attacked at 10:30 a.m. Bombs, and bullets from automatic rifles and machine guns rained down on them. Though the police and IRB personnel retaliated, there was no report of any casualty among the insurgents. As reinforcements arrived from the nearby Bishnupur police station, the insurgents retreated.
Police believe that it may have been a case of mistaken identity since as a rule the insurgents do not attack the state forces deliberately.
