Guruvayur temple fete from Wednesday

THRISSUR: The annual festival of the Guruvayur Sreekrishna Temple will be held from February 28 to March 9.

`Shudhi' and `Kalasa' rites began on February 20. `Sahasra Kalasa Abhishekam' will be performed on February 27. This will be followed by `Brahma Kalasa Abhishekam.'

`Anayottam' (February 28), `Utsava Bali' (March 7), `Pallivetta' (March 8) and `Arat' (March 9) will be held. The following are some of the cultural programmes being held as part of the festival:

February 28: Staging of Kathakali (`Geetopadesam,' `Nalacharitha Nalaam Divasam,' `Kalakeyavadhom Uttara Bhagam' featuring the Kalamandalam major troupe and veterans such as Kalamandalam Gopi, Kottakkal Sivaraman and Pathiyur Sankarankutty, 9.30 p.m.

March 1: Bhajan by Sai Dharmasthan, 11.30 a.m., Cultural programmes, 2 p.m., Harikatha `'Syamanthakam') by Madhurima Unnikrishnan, 4 p.m., Nadaswara recital by Tirupati V. Satyanarayana accompanied by Valayappetti Subramanian on the tavil, 6 p.m., Mohiniyattom by Gopika Varma, 8 p.m.

March 2: Melappadam by Kottakkal Narayanan, Vengeri Narayanan Namboodiri, Kalamandalam Rajan, Kalamandalam Harinarayanan, 11.30 a.m., Guitar recital by Thrichambaram Murali, 4 p.m., Carnatic vocal recital by Pala C. K. Ramachandran, accompanied by C. Rajendran (violin) and Thiruvananthapuram V. Surendran (mridangam), 6 p.m., Krishnanattom, 8 p.m.

March 3: Carnatic vocal recital by V. Dakshinamurthy and Gomani Maniyam, 11.30 a.m., instrumental ensemble led by Kuzhalmannam Ramakrishnan, 4 p.m., dance programme by Parvathy Raj, 6 p.m., staging of the dance-drama `Narasimha Avatharam,' 8 p.m.

March 4: Kanyarkali, 11.30 a.m., Thiruvathirakkali, 2 p.m., Music programme by Sankaran Namboodiri, 4 p.m., staging of the dance-drama `Narayaneeyam' by Aswini Viswanath, Koodiyattom, 8 p.m.

March 5: Kurathiyattom, 11.30 a.m., Chakyarkoothu, 2 p.m., devotional music led by T. S. Radhakrishnan, 4 p.m., veena-violin-nadaswaram programme by A. Kanyakumari, Mambalam M. K. S. Siva and Mudicondan Ramesh, 6 p.m., Carnatic vocal recital by Sanjay Subramaniam, 8 p.m.

March 6: Carnatic vocal recital by Rugmini Nair, 11.30 a.m., Ottanthullal by Jayaprabha and Kalamandalam Geetanandan, 2 p.m., music programme by A.V.K. Rajasimhan, 4 p.m., violin recital by T. N. Krishnan, 6 p.m., Kuchipudi by Vempatti Ravishankar, 8 p.m.

March 7: Seethankan Thullal by Manalur Gopinathan, 10.30 a.m., `Aksharashloka Sadassu', 11.30 a.m., Kaikottikkali, 2 p.m., Carnatic vocal recital by Kanjangad Ramachandran, 4 p.m., dance by Aparna K. Sharma, 6 p.m., devotional music by Unni Menon, 8 p.m.
