NEW DELHI: Blaming the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for the steep rise in inflation and the `deteriorating' internal security situation, particularly in the wake of the attack on the Delhi-Atari special link train last week, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday expressed confidence that the electoral verdict next week will be a disapproval of the Government. Talking to reporters after a meeting of the all-India office-bearers here, the former party president Venkaiah Naidu said the ``farcical Government could not last long and nationalist India was revolting against the UPA policies on national security, terrorism and J&K.'' Referring to the Prime Minister's recent letter to Chief Ministers to set up a cell to monitor prices, Mr. Naidu said this attempt to pass the responsibility for controlling prices upon the States was not merely an admission of failure but an abdication of duty. ``A dazed Government appears to be completely helpless in tackling the rising prices or farm sector indebtedness leading to suicide by farmers. To add to the inflationary pressures, the Government continues to impose different forms of new taxes,'' a resolution passed at the end of the meeting said. Suggesting that the country was facing an acute economic malaise, Mr. Naidu said the Prime Minister and his team might feel elated over the 8 per cent growth rate in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). But the rate was primarily on account of the impetus of economic decisions taken during the National Democratic Alliance regime between 1999 and 2004. ``Post 2004, ever since the UPA took over, economic decision-making has been paralysed with the most dismal failure of the UPA reflected in the rise in inflation and the plight of the Indian farmer,'' he said.
National security
Mr. Naidu said the record of the UPA in management of national security had been a cause for national concern as it had been consistently `soft' on terror. ``It uses terrorism to create a social divide and then use terrorism for its benefit by creating vote-bank politics. The terrorists continue to strike at will with the attack on the Delhi-Atari special link train at Panipat, a grim reminder to the people that the nation cannot have a Government which has done a `samjhauta' (compromise) with terrorism,'' he said. Despite the `advice' of intelligence agencies, the UPA `refused' to legislate an anti-terror law, he alleged. It also lacked the `political courage' to execute Mohd. Afzal convicted in the Parliament attack case. He said the past few months had seen a resurgence of terrorism in Assam, and the Maoists activities.
