Bringing women's issues to the fore

P. Anima

NEW DELHI: With Women's Day round the corner, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) is gearing up to celebrate the day with a variety of events.

The DCW has chosen ways to "reach out to people" and spread awareness and create sensitivity about women's issues. "The emphasis will also be on economic empowerment of women," says DCW Chairperson Kiran Walia. The Commission has booked about 50 stalls at Dilli Haat here to enable women from the various self-help groups associated with the DCW to market their goods.

"The hand-made products made by women will be on sale from February 27 to March 12," says Ms. Walia. The products on display would include hand-made jewellery, embroidery work, etc. "Some stalls have also been allotted to the wives of Army, Navy and Air Force officers to display their products, the proceeds from which will go towards the welfare of jawans," added Ms. Walia.

Street plays and other programmes will also be part of the celebrations. "On Women's Day on March 8 entry to Dilli Haat will be free for women," said the DCW Chairperson. The Commission has also decided to station floats bearing messages on domestic violence, foeticide and harassment at happening places like PVR Saket.
