KOLLAM: The State Government has issued orders to the Deputy Director of Fisheries, Kollam, to formally receive the 20 imported fibreglass fishing boats donated by the Chooravila Joseph Development Foundation to the tsunami-hit fishermen. The boats had been imported a few months ago. However, the Government had not constituted a committee to identify the beneficiaries. As a result, the boats were lying idle at a complex of the foundation in Kollam.
Three panels
Through an order dated February 8, 2007, the constituted three committees for the districts of Kollam, Alappuzha and Thiruvananthapuram for the purpose identifying the beneficiaries. In each district, the committee will comprise the respective District Collector, the Deputy Director of Fisheries and the Matysafed District Officer. The Government order said the boats were being accepted with the condition that no expenditure would be borne by the Government in the transaction of the boats. The order stated that the boats were replacements for the ones lost in the tsunami. If the number of beneficiary groups exceeded the number of boats, draw of lots would be followed for the selection.
