New Democracy tastes success in panchayat polls

Staff Reporter

Nayak elected to Ganjam zilla parishad from zone 30

  • Good show by party in Ganjam and Kandhamal districts
  • Party plans to increase support base in two Assembly segments

BERHAMPUR: Hardcore leftist party CPI-ML (New Democracy) has succeeded in laying foundation for electoral politics in Ganjam, Gajapati and Kandhamal districts through panchayat election wins.

Most remarkable was the success of its member, Pratap Nayak, who would be the first member of the party to represent in Ganjam Zilla Parishad.

Mr Nayak won from the zone 30 of Dharakote of Ganjam district defeating his nearest BJP rival. Amiya Malik of the party was elected sarpanch of Balarampur panchayat of Dharakote block uncontested. The two panchayat samity members elected from Balarampur and Manikpur panchayats of Dharakote block are CPI-ML (New Democracy) members.

In Sorada block of Ganjam district members of CPI-ML (New Democracy) have been elected sarpanchs at Salimagocha, Goudagotha and Siddhapur panchyayts. Voters of Goudagotha panchayat also elected a CPI-ML (New Democracy) member Rajendra Mallik as their panchayat samity member.

In Gajapati district the party did not have much luck like Ganjam district. But its member Daniel Sabar was elected sarpanch of Labanyagada panchayat of Gosani block and its activist Prakash Sabar would take over the post of sarpanch at Jhami panchyat of Guma block.

    Not a recognised party

In Kumbharigaon panchayat of Daringbadi block in Kandhamal district Nakul Padra of the party won the post of panchayat samity member.

All other candidates fielded by the party in south Orissa lost.

"Use of large scale money power by our rivals is one of the major reasons behind our defeats in many places," said Bhala Chandra Sarangi. All candidates of the party contested as independents as the party is not a recognised political party.

According to sources the leaders of CPI-ML (New Democracy) are now trying to increase their support base in Sorada and Mohana Assembly segments keeping next Assembly election in mind.
