Genuine critics rare: Sudhakaran

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Minister for Cooperation and Devaswoms G. Sudhakaran said here on Saturday that genuine literary critics were hard to come by these days.

He was speaking at a function to mark the handing over of the personal collection of books of the late M. Krishnan Nair, literary critic, to the EMS Cooperative Library, Kakkanad. The library, owned by the Ernakulam District Cooperative Bank, bought more than 7,800 books from the collection of Krishnan Nair.

Mr. Sudhakaran said the presence of criminals in literary criticism, as in politics, was increasing, and this was the reason for finding fewer genuine critics these days. Issues were not being highlighted in criticism, where persons were targeted.. When literary field and politics became cacophonous with similar criticism, what was needed was beacons of genuine criticism to guide the new generation, he said.

In his keynote address, Sukumar Azhikode, literary critic and orator, said the collection of books, now owned by the library, carried with them the spiritual remains of Krishnan Nair. This could be the beginning of a cultural renaissance.

Sethu, writer, inaugurated the website of the library (www.emslibrary.edcbank.com) . Balachandran Chullikad and Chemmanam Chacko, poets; and Vijayamma, Krishnan Nair's wife; were present.
