dated February 26, 1957: Trans-Polar flight

Two Scandinavian airliners met and exchanged greetings over the North Pole on February 24 as they inaugurated the world's first regular trans-Polar passenger route from Copenhagen to Tokyo. The captains of the two planes of the Scandinavian Airlines exchanged greetings as their aircraft passed and the Danish Premier, Mr. H.C. Hansen, broadcast a message to the world declaring the "great pioneering exploit" was a token of international cooperation. The planes passed each other over the North Pole, highlighting the start of a new service which will cut the Europe-Asian journey from 10,300 miles to 8,000 miles, reducing the time taken from 52 hours to 30 hours.
