CPI apprehensive of port project

Special Correspondent

Urges Government to drop the scheme

Puducherry: Member of the National Council of the Communist Party of India (CPI) R. Viswanathan MLA has protested the Government's move to establish a deep-sea port here.

Talking to newsmen here on Friday, he said that the port project would dislocate farmers, farm labourers and residents of Thengaithittu close to the town limits.

Expert team

He felt that the Centre should depute an expert team to ascertain the necessity to set up a port as the whole matter relating to environment and other aspects was within the jurisdiction of the Union Environment Ministry.

Already a protest had developed against the port project, and in the context of the relentless opposition, the administration should drop the scheme.

Another plan detrimental to people was to have a satellite town in Kombakkam in the Modeliarpet block.

A large tract of farmlands would be lost and farmers, dairy farmers as well as farm labourers would face hardship.

The Government must be cautious before letting any multi-national companies to make forays into the Union Territory, he warned.
