DIABETES AWARENESS: Dr V. Mohan, Managing Director, Mohan Diabetes Specialities Centre, Chennai, addressing participants at a diabetes awareness camp organised by the Rotary Club of Pondicherry (Cosmos) at St. Antony's Multi Purpose Hall in Puducherry on Sunday.

Puducherry: The Mohan's Diabetes Specialties Centre, Chennai, has been implementing the "PACE Diabetes Project" in a phased manner by organising free camps to generate awareness among people of various causes of diabetes and methods to combat it.

Its Managing Director Dr. V. Mohan said this while addressing a one-day diabetes awareness camp organised by the Rotary Club of Pondicherry (Cosmos) at St.Antony's Multi Purpose Hall here on Sunday.

Dr. Mohan said that the project was being implemented in association with Chennai Willingdon Corporate Foundation.

Teams of staff and doctors were interacting with school children to catch them young so that they could act as messengers to generate awareness among elders. Free blood test was done as part of the three-year project.

Dr. Mohan, who highlighted dos and don'ts on diabetes, said that the PACE project had covered around 80 schools in Chennai.

He explained the positive impact of physical activities and exercises to keep diabetes at bay.

Although heredity was among the reasons for occurrence of the disease, there should be judicious choice of food to keep oneself fit.

He said that there was a general apprehension that India would have 20 per cent of the world's diabetic population by 2025. Presently, India had around 4 crore diabetic patients.

He said diabetes was posing a threat to dislocation of economic growth of the country and there was need to protect precious human resources.

The changes in lifestyle, attitude to take high-calorie food and lack of physical activities were contributing to the increase in number of people becoming diabetic patients.

Earlier, inaugurating the camp, Senior Superintendent of Police B. Srikanth said that ignorance had been resulting in diabetes. He wanted the Specialty Centre to open one of its branches in Puducherry so that people here could benefit.

President of the Club A. Mani, chairman of the Camp Committee Ashish R. Dolia, its secretary R.V. Selvanathan and director of the Community services V.P. Selvaraj also spoke. A question-answer session was also held.
