Implement Jayati Ghosh, Swaminathan panel recommendations: APRS

  • Corpus of Rs. 1,000 cr. sought to stabilise crop market prices
  • APRS to petition Prime Minister on waiver of interest

KADAPA: Relief and rehabilitation package for kin of farmers committing suicide should be modified by incorporating recommendations made by Jayati Ghosh and M.S. Swaminathan Commissions, Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham district honorary president K. Lingamurthy said on Sunday.

Addressing sangham members here, he said the package being implemented was incomprehensive. P.A. Choudary Commission formed with various associations deduced that debt trap was the main factor behind ryot suicides, but the Government was failing to concentrate on that aspect, he alleged.

Andhra Pradesh Liberation of Debts Act 1934 should be implemented and loans of small and marginal farmers should be waived in mandals declared drought-affected for two consecutive years, sangham district president A. Chandra Sudhakar Reddy and secretary B. Venkatasubbaiah said.

    Corpus fund

A corpus fund of Rs. 1,000 crores should be set up for stabilising crop market prices and crop insurance premium should be reduced by two per cent, they said. They called farmers to participate in a `chalo Assembly' programme on March 8.

The meeting resolved to send a representation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking waiver of principal and interest of loans rescheduled in 2004.
