Kannan wins

Madurai: Former State champion S.S. Kannan defeated N. Venkatesh 23-21, 21-19 for the title in the Sri Jayavilas senior State-ranking badminton tournament at the MGR Race Course indoor stadium here on Sunday.

The final, as expected, was keenly fought. Venkatesh, with his accurate smashes and drops, raced to a 15-9 lead in the first game. But Kannan came back strongly to take six points in a row to level at 15-15. Kannan, with his experience, clinched the issue at 23-21.

The second game was also fought well. Kannan was leading till 19 points, but Venkatesh raised his game to level the score at 19-all. Kannan took the next two points to win the game and the title.

Women: Singles (final): Aneskowser bt C. Archana 21-17, 19-21, 21-5. Semifinals: S. Archana bt A. Priya 21-14, 21-17; Aneskowser bt Abirami 21-11, 21-16. Doubles (final): Aneskowser & Archana Devi bt Priya & Suzannan 21-15, 21-19.

Mixed doubles (final): Raghavan & Priya bt Prakash & Suzannan 21-19, 21-8.

Balamalai bowls well

Medium-pacer Balamalai's five for 32 helped TVS Club chalk out an emphatic seven-wicket victory over Sri Chakra Tyres CC in the MDCA first division `A' zone league at Madurai on Sunday.

The scores (first division `A' zone): Majestic CC 143 in 30.5 overs (Saravana Sundareswaran 49) bt Pykara CC 70 in 18.4 overs (Saravana Sundareswaran four for 18); Sri Chakra CC 132 in 25.4 overs (Danush 50, Balamalai five for 32) lost to TVS CC 133 for three in 14.5 overs (Srinivasan 40); Spark CC 170 in 42 overs lost to Arasaradi CC 171 for five in 36 overs (Dass Winsley 42, Madhavan 51 not out); Freak CC 52 in 20 overs (Sethuraman four for 20, Murugan four for 18) lost to Amigose CC 54 for three in 11 overs.

Big win for Olympian

Olympian Kittu FC posted a thumping 6-0 victory over Golden Star FC in the MDFA `C' division league for the Hi-Tech Arai Trophy at Madurai on Sunday.

Robin on song

Four goals by Robin helped Coronation FC trounce Peter memorial FC 6-0 in the DDFA `B' division league for the Coronation Trophy at Dindigul on Sunday.

No sweat for Eriodu

Eriodu CC beat Orange Shirts CC by ten wickets in the DDCA third division league at Dindigul on Sunday.

The scores: Orange Shirts CC 67 for eight in 23 overs lost to Eriodu CC 71 for no loss in 5.2 overs (P. Senthil Kumar 37 not out).

Easy for Blues FC

Blues FC (Velangudi) bt Kalaivanar FC 3-0 in the Sivagangai DFA first division league at Karaikudi on Sunday.
