"Rural business hubs vital for development"

Nagapattinam : Small and medium scale industries should be established in the villages through the Rural Business Hubs (RBHs) that would pave way for economic growth and will generate more income in the respective village panchayats, said Mani Shankar Aiyar, Union Minister for Panchayati Raj, at Mayiladuturai, on Saturday.

Addressing a meeting of village panchayat presidents and representatives of local bodies in his home Mayiladuturai constituency, Mr. Aiyar said that a number of entrepreneurs had come forward to start small and medical scale industries in rural areas in the country.

On Saturday, as many as 33 Memorandums of Understanding were signed between the panchayats and entrepreneurs for starting small, tiny and medium scale industries, including garment making, ceramic, herbal, food processing, brick and paper cup making units ranging from Rs.2 lakh to Rs.4 crore in Mayiladuturai Lok Sabha constituency area in Nagapattinam district in the presence of Mr Aiyar.

Mr. Aiyar pointed out that a maximum number of 46 MoUs had so far been signed for starting rural industries in Mayiladuturai Parliamentary constituency while only 32 MoUs were signed elsewhere in the country.

He said that he would encourage the village panchayats to start income-generating units.

Tenkasi S.Jawahar, Nagapattinam Collector, who presided over the function, said that the district administration would extend all help for the panchayats to establish the units and redress their problems if any.

V. Raman, Facilitator for RBH, Ministry of Panchayati Raj, explained the salient features of the hub activities.

S. Rajakumar, MLA, Mayiladuturai, G. Radha, Project Officer, DRDA, Nagapattinam, and others spoke.
