For that pleasant experience

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Die-hard coffee drinkers have a reason to cheer. Disputing the claim of many over the ill effects of coffee, several prominent personalities associated with the coffee industry have come out strongly in favour of this beverage. At a session on "Positively Coffee" during the India International Coffee Festival 2007 here on Sunday, honorary chairman of Italy-based Illycaffe Earnesto Illy said, "People drink coffee not only for its aroma and taste, but also to have a pleasant experience. A good cup of coffee makes one feel younger, happier, and healthier. Drinking three to four cups of coffee keeps your bone alertness at the highest level."

Coffee, he said, stimulates one's brain and even an octogenarian can benefit from it. Dr. Illy said, "Caffeine has to be in one's body in a limited quantity like alcohol."

Jakko Tuomilehto of Diabetic Unit of National Public Health Institute, University of Helsinki said, "Drinking coffee substantially reduces the risk of developing the most common form of diabetes Type 2. It has no effect on stroke. People who drink coffee in excess have lower glucose level than others. Adding sugar to coffee has no effect on diabetes. However, smokers have two to three times higher risk of diabetes."

Finland has the highest rate of consumption of coffee in the world, while India has the largest number of diabetics. Quoting a recent study conducted on 14,000 people, Prof. Tuomilehto said those who drank more than 10 cups of coffee a day were less likely to suffer from diabetes. "Such high consumption reduces the risk of developing the disease by 79 per cent for women and 55 per cent for men," he said. Sylvia Robert Sargeant, coordinator for Positively Coffee, International Coffee Organisation, spoke.
