This Day That Age
A scheme for the conversion of the Trincomalee naval base into an industrial free port after it is handed over to the Ceylon Government by the British is now being worked out, it was reported in Colombo. According to tentative proposals, an area of about a mile in radius around the base will be demarcated as the free port. The Ceylon Government feels the land within this demarcated area could be leased out to foreign commercial and industrial organisations at nominal rates for setting up factories and processing plants, which could manufacture a variety of goods to be sold in the South-East Asian region.
