News Analysis
The expansion of FDI in a report "FDI in retail: confusion in UPA" (February 24, 2007) was given as Foreign Directive Investment. It should have been Foreign Direct Investment. A sentence in a report "President's alternative to GDP" (Chennai city, February 24, 2007, page 3) was: "By the time he [President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam] was finished, he had the auditorium agreeing with him." A reader wonders whether the expression "he was finished" indicates that he was not well protected by the three or four rings of security. It should have been "By the time he had finished ... ." The strapline in a feature "Hornets from Asia find new home" ("Newscape" page, February 24, 2007) was: "The bee-eating birds visit Europe, and decide to stay". It should have been bee-eating insects. The second paragraph in "Karat hails poll announcement" (February 22, 2007) was: "CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat was of the view that it should put an end to the talk of conduct of free and fair elections in the State", leading to a query. Our Special Correspondent clarifies that Mr. Prakash Karat's statement was in the backdrop of reports that the Centre was contemplating imposing President's Rule in Uttar Pradesh on the ground that the law and order situation would affect conduct of free and fair polls. In the subsequent paragraph it was mentioned that Mr. Karat said that the State Government should take all necessary steps to help the Election Commission conduct free and fair polls. It is Virginia Flue Cured and not Virginia Fluke Cured (VFC) as stated in a report "`FDI in tobacco will help improve growers' life'" ("Karnataka editions, February 21, 2007). A retired tobacco scientist, ICAR, points out that cigarette tobacco (FCV) is cured in a barn fitted with flues (cast iron pipes). Hot air from a furnace is passed through these flues resulting in an increase of temperature inside the barn from ambient up to 150 degrees Fahrenheit over a duration of about 120 hours. The green harvested leaves inside the barn undergo chemical and physical changes and cure to the final product of a golden yellow colour. Hence the term flue cured, and not fluke cured. In a report "Ashok, Vivek share lead" ("Sport, February 24, 2007), on the second round in the Solaris Global Green PGTI golf tournament at the Bangalore Golf Club, it was stated in the fifth paragraph that S.S.P. Chowrasia had a card of 66. This was the best card of the day and not what was stated in the second paragraph that Vivek Bhandari shared the day's best card with three others at 67.
