BANGALORE: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) on Monday launched an indefinite demonstration in front of the Labour Commissioner's office here demanding various measures to safeguard the interests of labourers working in factories in Bangalore district. The strength of contract labourers is more than that of regular employees in several factories. Contract labourers have been forced to do the work of regular employees. The Government should therefore immediately convene the meeting of the Committee on prohibiting contract labour system, which was set up several years ago, CITU Bangalore district president E.K.N. Rajan and General Secretary K.N. Umesh said in a memorandum. The committee has not met for many years and several petitions are pending before it, they said. The CITU leaders also brought to the notice of the authorities the plight of the labourers at Pilugumpa Industrial Estate near Hoskote in Bangalore Rural district, who have been denied trade union rights, and also of the contract labourers in MICO in Adugodi.
