BANGALORE: Contract employees of Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) on Monday staged a demonstration in front of the KPTCL office alleging that the corporation had not given preference to them while recruiting linemen. Five of the protesters tried to climb the Cauvery Bhavan, the KPTCL headquarters, threatening to jump from the building and commit suicide. The police took the five into custody. They were identified as Shivaprasad, Chandrashekar, Shivakumar, Bangarappa and Maruti Prasad, all of whom have completed lineman training course. The police also arrested 21 others, including three women, who allegedly encouraged the five youths to climb the Cauvery Bhavan and jump from there. The arrested were later released on bail, the police said. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Ulsoor Gate sub-division) B.B. Ashok Kumar told The Hindu that the protest was unrelated to the suicide attempt made by four youths on Sunday at a function in a Gulbarga village that was attended by President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
