Basu to be conferred honorary degree

KOLKATA : Veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu is to be conferred a D.Litt. [honoris causa] by the Calcutta University for his contributions to politics and society at large, the Registrar of the university, S. Banerjee, told The Hindu here on Tuesday.

Convocation on March 17

The honorary degree will be conferred on him at a special convocation of the university to be held on March 17, Mr. Banerjee said.

Mr. Basu has reportedly agreed to be at the convocation, to be chaired by West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, who is the Chancellor of the university.

According to Mr. Banerjee, the decision to confer the honorary degree on Mr. Basu had been taken by the university's Senate.
