dated February 28, 1957: Learn to live united

Prime Minister Nehru has appealed to the people to "learn to live in a united way and develop an emotional integration of minds and hearts." Addressing an election meeting in Jubbulpore on February 26, he said the British imperialists were able to rule India because of the people's disunity and the weaknesses flowing from it. "Let us learn a lesson from this and take steps never again to be disunited, nor allow anyone to disunite us." If the people worked in a cooperative way, they could achieve big things. "I want the cooperative spirit to develop. We should try to have agricultural cooperatives as also cooperatives in industry." Criticising the communal parties, he said they could only bring ruin to India. These parties divided the Indian people and isolated them into separate shells.
