dated February 28, 1957: Autonomy demand

Moulana Bhashani, President of the ruling Awami League, announced in Dacca that he would soon declare a day for starting a movement for full regional autonomy for East Pakistan. He disclosed that Pakistan Prime Minister, Mr. Suhrawardy, had come to a written agreement with him to the effect that he would quit the Government if he failed to achieve "full regional autonomy" for East Pakistan. The Awami League chief said other important political parties, including the Muslim League, were also committed to full regional autonomy for the province.
